A dominant 76–62 win over the Iowa State Cyclones has pushed the Tennessee Volunteers into their third straight Elite Eight – and proved that a completely rebuilt roster can still chase championship dreams. Under head coach Rick Barnes, Tennessee is now one step away from making program history.
A New Roster, Same Championship Mindset
In previous runs, Tennessee leaned on familiar leaders like Zakai Zeigler. This season, however, the Vols reloaded with 11 new players – essentially building from scratch.
Still, the ambition never changed. From day one, Barnes made it clear: this team had what it takes to win it all. And players like Jaylen Carey bought in immediately, confident the talent was there to go the distance.

Dominance in the Paint Changes Everything
At the United Center, Tennessee showcased a completely different identity—physical, aggressive, and relentless on the glass.
Led by Felix Okpara and Carey, the Vols controlled the game inside:
- Total rebounds: 43 – 22
- Offensive rebounds: 16 – 8
- Points in the paint: 42 – 30
Both big men recorded double-doubles, highlighting a frontcourt that overwhelmed Iowa State on both ends.
Learning from Last Year’s Collapse
Tennessee’s interior weakness was exposed in last year’s Elite Eight loss to the Houston Cougars, where they were outplayed physically and struggled offensively.
That loss became the turning point. This year’s roster was built to fix those exact issues—and it showed. With improved size, toughness, and development, Tennessee now looks like a far more complete contender.
One Win Away from History
The Vols now face the top-seeded Michigan Wolverines with a trip to the Final Four on the line.
A win would mark Tennessee’s first-ever Final Four appearance—a milestone that has eluded the program for decades. For Barnes, it would also be his first return to that stage since 2003.
Iowa State Hurt by Key Absence
The Cyclones were without All-America forward Joshua Jefferson, who was sidelined with an ankle injury.
Head coach T. J. Otzelberger admitted the team did everything possible to get him ready, but ultimately, it wasn’t enough. His absence was a major factor in Iowa State’s struggles.

From Underdog to True Contender
Not long ago, Tennessee had just a single Elite Eight appearance in its history. Now, they’ve reached three straight and established themselves as one of college basketball’s most consistent programs.
This isn’t a Cinderella story anymore—this is a powerhouse in the making.
